Virtual Schools Equal Live Classroom Methods
|
| |
Online learning and state-led virtual schools can be as effective as live classroom teaching methods, according to a study conducted by the University of Florida that is being funded by AT&T to the tune of $600,000.
The study focuses on when and how online instruction works most effectively. According to preliminary results, teachers are finding innovative ways to engage students online, and virtual schools are demonstrating that they can be at least as effective as traditional, face-to-face instruction
The researchers’ e-learning tool kit includes a new Website that serves as a national clearinghouse for all teachers and schools involved in Internet-based education. Virtual schools afford researchers access to saved online data that can be used to compare the effectiveness of a variety of approaches to education, enrollment and student achievement.

Online Tutoring Grows by Leaps and Bounds
|
|
|
According to an industry report, more than 100,000 students in more than 50 North American colleges and universities have gained direct access to peers, paid tutors and professors. The AskOnline Website provides a structured, flexible environment to connect qualified tutors with students via chat, whiteboard, videoconferencing, audio conferencing, discussion boards and private messaging.
According to the report, the AskOnline student count increased by 675 percent in 2006, more than nine times the enrollment increase in online college/university courses.
Online tutoring gives students access to more tutoring hours, time to frame questions and absorb answers, and the option to capture key points for reference in searchable transcripts. This type of online tutoring differs from a learning management system in that it's structured around people and their learning needs, not around specific course sections. Tutors often work across multiple courses, sections and grade levels.
Berkeley College, the University of Memphis, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Tampa are among the institutions that use AskOnline.

Wal- Mart to Sell Broadband Access
|
|
Hughes Network Systems of Germantown, Md., soon will sell its HughesNet satellite broadband Internet access service at 2,800 Wal-Mart department stores across the country.
With HughesNet, consumers in any region in the continental U.S. need only a view of the southern sky to have access to high-speed Internet.
The Hughes-Wal-Mart relationship will bring this access to many locations, including most of rural America, where terrestrial broadband services, such as cable and DSL, are often unavailable.
Wal-Mart will be offering HughesNet service plans with download speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps and pricing starting as low as $59.99. Every Wal-Mart customer who purchases the HughesNet service will receive an “ExpressPay” card for $100 to buy anything at Wal-Mart from groceries, toys, or automotive services, at the customer’s discretion.
