Online Learners are Lifetime Learners

A recent report from Research and Markets Ltd. ("The Future Online Learner") predicts continued growth in online enrollments. The report also identifies four types of future online learners: career climbers, perfection seekers, mid-life changers and content dreamers.

Half (47%) of those surveyed indicated they are very interested in a degree or certificate program offered partially or completely online. Furthermore, those most interested in online education expect to enroll sooner than their less-enthusiastic counterparts.

In the prime of their lives, future online learners are better educated and compensated than the average U.S. resident, the report continues. Sixty-nine percent have earned at least a bachelor's degree. Half (49%) are between the ages of 35 and 39. Business is the preferred field of study.

Surviving. No! Thriving in a Tough Learning Market

In a panel discussion with six learning executives conducted last week, Elearning! Magazine reports these five key strategies for thriving in the current economic market.
1. Protect revenue producing learning investments. "CLOs and executives need to tie what they are doing with the life blood of the company," reports George Selix of Sun Microsystems. "Second, execute it great.. . and deliver results," he concludes.
2. Get talent where you need it. "It's the business stupid," says Nick Van Dam of Deloitte. Look at all the business units (globally) deploy to grow areas and train to fill those (emerging) jobs. From USA to China, India, etc.
3. Re-deploy, train and develop employees via e-learning and online learning, now more than ever. "With 600 partners (worldwide), we need (to continue to train) for growth and global needs," stresses Van Dam.
4. Be an advocate for this process. If you are absent from the table and the discussions, you will lose and so will the company in the long term.
5. "Keep focused on where you want the company and your team to be at the end of this recession, in 12 to 18 months," says George Selix of Sun Microsystems. Those that had the best plan, will benefit earlier than those that did not.

Executive participants include: George Selix, Sun Microsystems' Senior Director of Employee & Partner Learning Services, Bill Byron Convevitch, CLO of Wireless Internet Institute, Nick Van Dam of Deloitte, Deb Tees, Vice President, Enterprise Learning Initiatives for Fifth Third Bank, Steven Teal, former CLO of Honeywell and Larry Israelite, Vice President, HR Development for Liberty Mutual. Language Matters

There's a "powerful need for higher value services to support global content value-chain strategy ... for delivering multilingual communications that align with global business goals," says a report from Gilbane Group Inc. And innovative "language service providers ... are uniquely positioned to assist organizations with these services."

The new report, sponsored by Jonckers, is titled "Multilingual Communications as a Business Imperative." It compiles the results of in-depth interviews with people who manage content and translation/localization within multinational organizations worldwide.

"Most respondents believe that current efforts are falling short," says Karl Kadie, contributing analyst with Gilbane Group. "Many need value-added services to help transform the way they achieve their goals. Language service-providers have significant expertise in delivering the needed services, especially change management."
